South Devon is blessed with two heritage railways, the Dartmouth Steam Railway (Paignton – Kingswear) and the South Devon Railway (Totnes – Buckfastleigh). These photographs were taken during various days out on those lines and on occasions when ‘Torbay Express’ excursions arrived in the area to bring an old friend from school. The photos are presented in chronological sequence –

Tangmere and Oliver Cromwell were visiting Devon as ‘Torbay Express’ excursions. Dumbleton Hall was photographed awaiting overhaul and boiler lift.

 
Locomotives:

Goliath: GWR 2-8-0T ‘5205’ class no 5239 “Goliath” was built in Swindon 1924 and based at Neath for use on heavy coal trains until 1963.

Tangmere: SR “Battle of Britain” Class 4-6-2 no 34067 “Tangmere” was built in Brighton, 1947.

Oliver Cromwell: BR Standard Class 7 (Britannia Class) 4-6-2 no 70013 “Oliver Cromwell” was built at Crewe, 1951.

GWR 3205: GWR 0-6-0 No. 3205 (2251 Class) was built at Swindon 1946 for use on Welsh lines and represents the last design of 0-6-0 tender engines to enter service in the UK.

Dumbleton Hall: GWR 4-6-0 No.4920 “Hall” class, “Dumbleton Hall” was built at Swindon, 1929.

BR 5526: BR Prairie Tank 4575 class 2-6-2T no 5526 was built at Swindon, 1928.

GWR 5576: GWR 5700 class 0-6-0 pannier tank locomotive was built at Swindon in 1930 and numbered 5786. A number of 5700s were sold to London Transport for use on the underground network after being withdrawn by British Rail. This locomotive was sold to London Transport and re-numbered as L92 in 1958. It was withdrawn by LT in 1969 and is currently in operation on the South Devon Railway.

Lydham Manor: GWR 7800 Class 4-6-0 no. 7827 “Lydham Manor” was built at Swindon, 1950.

Hercules: GWR 2-8-0T ‘4200’ class no 4277 “Hercules” was built in Swindon, 1920.
